Garbage! The Revolution Starts at Home is a feature documentary about how the family household has become one of the most ferocious environmental predators of our time.

Concerned for the future of his new baby boy, writer/director Andrew Nisker takes an average urban family, the McDonalds, and asks them to keep every scrap of garbage that they create for three months. filmmaker Andrew Nisker skillfully and succinctly puts all of the information in one place—shifting the movement from melting glaciers and oil slicks to our neighborhoods and into our homes, so that average people can connect the dots between their actions and the environment and be inspired to change their polluting ways.

Halloween Poetry Slam w/ Daphne Gottlieb - 10/28/08 - Tuesday
6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Free and Open to the Public

The USC Upstate Center for Women's and Gender Studies presents Daphne Gottlieb returning to Spartanburg by popular demand to read from her newest collection of poetry Kissing Dead Girls. In the tradition of Anne Sexton’s poems in Transformations, Daphne Gottlieb revises the contemporary “fairy tales” that shape the public’s perspective on women’s lives in the contemporary United States. The Center for Women’s and Gender Studies hosts this Halloween poetry slam in order to look at the everyday terrors that women and girls continue to face in their lives, and in the media reflections of those lives.

According to the publisher, Kissing Dead Girls is a kisstorical romangling that investigates myth, history, gender and states of being. Beginning with the province of legend, Kissing Dead Girls uses poetic inappropriacies to touch historical paragons and examine what touches us in them in vignettes casting the narrator as the lover of Josephine Baker, Amelia Earhart, Anne Frank, Frida Kahlo, Jonbenet Ramsey, Sharon Tate, and Karen Carpenter. The "real" world fuses with the mundane as a liver is received in the mail by an unexpecting recipient; a woman replaces the moon with her heart; and a man finds himself a woman too dead to love. Gertrude Stein's work is co-opted and re-seen in an attempt to unpack the relationship between love and war; Walt Whitman makes a command performance in dismembered bits of forced formal verse; and "The Exorcist" and "The Devil in Miss Jones" are sutured together in an attempt to locate the true horror of desire.

About the Author: San Francisco-based Performance Poet Daphne Gottlieb stitches together the ivory tower and the gutter just using her tongue. She is the editor of Homewrecker: An Adultery Reader, as well as the author of three previous collections of poetry, Final Girl, Why Things Burn, and Pelt. Final Girl was the winner of the Audre Lorde Award in Poetry for 2003 from Publishing Triangle. Additionally, Final Girl was named one of The Village Voice's Favorite Books of 2003, and received rave reviews from Publisher's Weekly, The San Francisco Chronicle and The Village Voice. Why Things Burn was the winner of a 2001 Firecracker Alternative Book Award (Special Recognition - Spoken Word) and was also a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award for 2001. Recent press has praised Gottlieb’s work as "fierce," "unapologetic," "scorching" and "deliriously gutsy." Besides anchoring three national performance poetry tours, recently featuring with Maggie Estep, Hal Sirowitz and Lydia Lunch, Gottlieb has also appeared across the country with the Slam America bus tour and with notorious all-girl wordsters Sister Spit. She has performed at festivals coast-to-coast, including South by Southwest, Bumbershoot, and Ladyfest Bay Area. Gottlieb currently teaches at New College of California, and has also performed and taught creative writing workshops around the country, from high schools and colleges to community centers. She received her MFA from Mills College.

Another Week, Another Blog

In Memory of our friend, Jared Harris

The Tangled Web lost one of our earliest and dearest friends this week. Jared Harris died Saturday, October 25 from complications associated with his ongoing battle with cancer. Jared was 36 years old and he was The Tangled Web's 1st full time employee in 1996. He worked at The Web for nearly 4 years (until he graduated from college) and went on to a teaching career in Art.

The receiving of friends will be Monday, October 27 from 7pm to 9pm at Greenlawn (Hillcrest) and the funeral will be Tuesday, October 28 at 3pm at the same location.

Jared was a gentle spirit and was liked by everyone without exception. We will miss his presence and we will honor his memory with the same smiles and laughter that he always brought to us.

These films, all "green" documentaries, were a huge hit in 2007 and are back by popular demand. Each event features a panel discussion and offers audience participation.

KING CORN is a feature documentary about two friends, one acre of corn, and the subsidized crop that drives our fast-food nation. In King Corn, Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, best friends from college on the east coast, move to the heartland to learn where their food comes from. With the help of friendly neighbors, genetically modified seeds, and powerful herbicides, they plant and grow a bumper crop of America's most-productive, most-subsidized grain on one acre of Iowa soil. But when they try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises troubling questions about how we eat-and how we farm

An Evening with Hope Nunnery - 10/22/08 - Wednesday
7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

The Hub City Writers Project presents an Evening with Hope Nunnery. Born in the woods of South Carolina, Hope Nunnery experienced gospel music from an early age. As a little girl, she listened in awe to the Southern Baptist Church music, and was fascinated by the genre’s melodic, melancholy undertones. She has kept this influence tight and close to her heart, adding blues, country, old time and bluegrass to create a cornucopia of pure American roots music.Hope’s poignant lyrics evoke a determined passion for the expression of what has been lived and felt, leaving little room for double entendres or half words. The result is a constant tapping into far corners of childhood memory to paint haunting images of life, religion, family, and love, like these verses in “Little Pink Radio:”“Mama got a black eye, she staring out the window Puffin on a Pell Mell, coffee getting colder, she Big and fat and pretty, better than a movie star Mama sweet foot tapping to the sound of the soft guitars.”Hope’s evocative vocals add credence and seriousness to her lyrics. She sings with an authority that is at times motherly, at times sisterly, infusing the accompanying chords with a sense of urgency that is primal, not hasty.

" Zoinks! " Like Who Knew this actually Happened?

This Just goes to prove, Not All Recluses become Scooby Doo Villains…Case In Point the Following Story.

89-year-old charged with keeping kids' ball

BLUE ASH, Ohio (AP) - Police in Ohio say an 89-year-old woman is facing a charge of petty theft because neighborhood children accuse her of refusing to give back their football.

Edna Jester was arrested last week in the Cincinnati suburb of Blue Ash.

Police say one child's father complained that Jester kept the youngsters' ball after it landed in her yard. Police Capt. James Schaffer says there has been an ongoing dispute in the neighborhood over kids' balls landing in the woman's yard.

Jester said Monday she has received many calls and didn't have time to discuss the matter any more.
Jester is to appear in court next month. The maximum penalty for a petty theft conviction in Ohio is six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.

Another Green Screen Film and a Moonlight Bike Ride

Green Screen Film
This week: Everything's Cool
Thursday, October 16th 7:30pm
Free Admission

About the Film A REAL-LIFE DISASTER MOVIE EVERYTHING'S COOL is a film about America finally "getting" global warming in the wake of the most dangerous chasm ever to emerge between scientific understanding and political action. While industry funded nay-sayers sing what just might be their swan song of pseudo- scientific deception, a group of global warming messengers are on a high stakes quest to find the iconic image, the magic language, the points of leverage that will finally create the political will to move the United States from its reliance on fossil fuels to the new clean energy economy - AND FAST.

Throughout history, artists have used their work as a medium in the search for truth. The political visions of artists have played a key role in this search and helped to define the truth of our society. The United States was founded in the name of freedom, equality, democracy, and our freedom of expression is central to these American ideals. In the year of this landmark American Presidential Campaign, Art and Politics 08’ explores the ways in which contemporary art seeks social change.A national call for entries was put out for this exhibit, particularly seeking works that address issues present in the 2008 American Presidential Campaign. The following artists are included in this show: Josey Hale, Nanette Wylde & Kent Manske, Felicia Greenlee, Orie Shafer, Margi Weir, Cherie Tymkiw, Bob Tomolillo, Heidi Blackwood, Valerie Mendoza, Sarah Paulsen The exhibit will be on display through November 14th.

I found this interesting( Read Below )

How to Lose Weight and Eat Anything

You can eat basically anything you want, and you'll lose weight if you religiously take a brisk 30-minute walk six days a week, according to researchers from the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. This amount of exercise is enough to trim your waistline and cut your risk of developing metabolic syndrome, a common condition linked to obesity and a sedentary lifestyle that raises the odds of heart disease, diabetes and stroke, reports Reuters Health. "Our study shows that you'll benefit even if you don't make any dietary changes," study leader Johanna L. Johnson said in a statement.

The study: The Duke team examined results from the STRRIDE study (Studies of a Targeted Risk Reduction Intervention through Defined Exercise), which was funded by the National Institutes of Health. In this study, 171 middle-aged and overweight men and women were examined for the effects of varying amounts and intensity of exercise.

The results: They found that 41 percent of the participants had metabolic syndrome before they began exercising regularly. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of five conditions: a large waistline, high blood pressure, high levels of harmful triglycerides, low levels of "good" HDL cholesterol and high blood sugar. But after eight months of exercise, only 27 percent still had metabolic syndrome. "That's a significant decline in prevalence," said Johnson. "It's also encouraging news for sedentary, middle-aged adults who want to improve their health. It means they don't have to go out running four or five days a week; they can get significant health benefits by simply walking around the neighborhood after dinner every night." In addition, the Duke team found there was a greater health benefit to doing exercise of moderate intensity most days of the week over more intense activity just a few days a week.

The takeaway: Duke cardiologist Dr. William E. Kraus, the study's principal investigator, told Reuters, "The results of our study underscore what we have known for a long time. Some exercise is better than none, more exercise is generally better than less, and no exercise can be disastrous." The study findings were published in the American Journal of Cardiology this month.

TONIGHT @ the Shworoom

Matthew Knights Williams CD RELEASE - 10/10/08 - Friday
8:30 pm - 11:30 pm

Tickets : $10

MATTHEW KNIGHTS WILLIAMS is a family man and artist living and working in Cowpens, SC. In the book, Hub City Music Makers, music writer Peter Cooper describes Matthew as “an enormously talented and undeniably magnetic performer.” After surviving a turbulent adolescence and young adulthood spent navigating the pitfalls of destructive excess, Matthew has arrived at a place of grateful acceptance where his musical works reflect his experience, talent, and the hard won maturity of his soul and character.

COTTONWOOD, the new solo release from Matthew Knights Williams, tells the story of two lifelong friends who travel the same path, yet meet with different fates. Written in response to the untimely death of a close friend, the recording is deeply introspective and intended as a cautionary tale. Matthew, an accomplished songwriter and guitarist, employed top Nashville session players Jimmy Carter, John Hobbs, Kerry Marx, Brent Mason, Scott Sanders, and Scott Williamson to present this intensely personal material to the listening public. The result is Cottonwood. Matthew’s powerful lyrics, instantly recognizable vocals, and contagious melodies are exper tly delivered with a thoughtful, pleasing balance of Americana, Roots, and Rock.

Matthew will be joined on this night by several other musicians including Wes Wyatt and The Skinnymen (Bob Hinch, Wes Wyatt, Carroll Foster, Frank Estes), Faysouxx, David Ezell, Matt Parks, Brandon Turner, Joy Finch, Kevin Heuer, Don McGraw, Steve Cantrell, Freddie Vandeford, Baker Maultsby, Marc Higgins, Annabelle Ranck and Master of Ceremonies Sander Morrison.

Saturday!

The Weather WILL BE EXCELLENT FOR THIS...

Sarah Witt Tipi Project - 10/11/08 - Saturday
4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

"TENT(ative)"; a site-specific art installation to be on display in downtown Spartanburg near 101 East Main Street from October 11th through November 2nd. HUB-BUB artist-in-residence Sarah Witt has created life-size Native-American style tipis from salvaged and sustainable materials. "TENT(ative)" is a minimalist reconstruction of a traditional Plains Indian village. The collection and arrangement of the tipis will transform a vacant lot on Main Street into a lively green space by inviting the public to visit, explore and contemplate within the park-like environment.

The tents vary in height, from 10 feet to 17 feet, and each have a unique cover. The tipi skeleton is constructed from bamboo, a renewable resource. The tent covers are sewn from colorful plastic lumber tarps, which are discarded daily in every lumber yard. The concept of creating a structure from local sustainable materials parallels the Native Americans' model of resourcefulness in regards to their efficient and complete use of the buffalo. To respect the customary Indian formation, the doors to each unit will be facing the east.

We anticipate "TENT(ative)" to intrigue those who frequent downtown and additionally draw new visitors to the area. The unusual juxtaposition of modern waste materials with the humble iconic structure of the tipi will spur awareness, investigating issues of excess and sustainability. With its Native American roots, "TENT(ative)"will be a unique space that encourages spiritual reflection and positive human interactions. The opening reception for TENT(ative) will be October 11th, 2008, from 4pm until 6pm.

This event is free and open to the public.
