Dehlia Low is a young Asheville, NC-based band focused on strong songwriting utilizing the sounds of early roots country and the ghosts of bluegrass past and present. Their songs feature honest, hard-hitting vocals with tight harmonies backed up beautifully by masterful dobro and mandolin playing, lively fiddling, solid guitar and upright bass. Don't Say It! 10 Banned Words
What do "maverick," "staycation," and "green" have in common? They should all be banned! So say the guardians of the English language, whose day jobs are at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. This group annually takes on the role of word police by collecting a list of words and phrases that we have used so much they have become annoying. The solution? Ban them!
Here are 10 of the banned words and phrases on the 2009 list that were winnowed down from hundreds of entries:
1. Green: Environmental buzzwords are getting the axe this year. "Green" and "going green" received the most nominations. If something is good for the environment, just say so. As Kermit the Frog would say, "It isn't easy being green."
2. Carbon footprint: When you hear this word, do you envision microscopic impressions on the surface of the earth where an atom of carbon forgot to wear its shoes? Leaving a carbon footprint is the newest way to be politically incorrect.
3. Maverick: I'm a maverick, he's a maverick, wouldn't you like to be a maverick, too? You know it's time to banish this word when members of the Maverick family, who are descended from the rancher who inspired the term, say it's being misused.
4. First dude: Skateboard English is not an appropriate way to refer to the spouse of a high-ranking public official.
5. Bailout: The use of emergency funds to remove toxic assets from banks' balance sheets is not a bailout. When your cousin calls you from jail in the middle of the night, that is a bailout.
6. Wall Street/Main Street: It was clever when we first heard it. Now it's just overused.
7. Staycation: "Vacation" does not mean "travel," nor does travel always involve vacation. Just ask all those business road warriors.
8. Not so much: This has been widely used in sports, such as, "The Gophers have a shot at the playoffs; the Chipmunks, not so much." Do I like concise writing? Yes. Do I like verbose clichés? Not so much.
9. Icon: An icon is a visual symbol or representation that inspires worship or veneration so let's find a new word to describe all those iconic actors and actresses. How about "legendary"? Or "famous"? Everyone can't be an icon.
10. It's that time of year again: When is it NOT that time of year again?

What do "maverick," "staycation," and "green" have in common? They should all be banned! So say the guardians of the English language, whose day jobs are at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. This group annually takes on the role of word police by collecting a list of words and phrases that we have used so much they have become annoying. The solution? Ban them!
Here are 10 of the banned words and phrases on the 2009 list that were winnowed down from hundreds of entries:
1. Green: Environmental buzzwords are getting the axe this year. "Green" and "going green" received the most nominations. If something is good for the environment, just say so. As Kermit the Frog would say, "It isn't easy being green."
2. Carbon footprint: When you hear this word, do you envision microscopic impressions on the surface of the earth where an atom of carbon forgot to wear its shoes? Leaving a carbon footprint is the newest way to be politically incorrect.
3. Maverick: I'm a maverick, he's a maverick, wouldn't you like to be a maverick, too? You know it's time to banish this word when members of the Maverick family, who are descended from the rancher who inspired the term, say it's being misused.
4. First dude: Skateboard English is not an appropriate way to refer to the spouse of a high-ranking public official.
5. Bailout: The use of emergency funds to remove toxic assets from banks' balance sheets is not a bailout. When your cousin calls you from jail in the middle of the night, that is a bailout.
6. Wall Street/Main Street: It was clever when we first heard it. Now it's just overused.
7. Staycation: "Vacation" does not mean "travel," nor does travel always involve vacation. Just ask all those business road warriors.
8. Not so much: This has been widely used in sports, such as, "The Gophers have a shot at the playoffs; the Chipmunks, not so much." Do I like concise writing? Yes. Do I like verbose clichés? Not so much.
9. Icon: An icon is a visual symbol or representation that inspires worship or veneration so let's find a new word to describe all those iconic actors and actresses. How about "legendary"? Or "famous"? Everyone can't be an icon.
10. It's that time of year again: When is it NOT that time of year again?

Art Walk Returns...EVERY 3rd Thursday!!!!
ART WALK SPARTANBURG
Art Walk Spartanburg returns on Thursday, February 19 from 5 to 9 p.m.
In a new opportunity to explore the many art resources downtown. Posters and maps are available at the art venues, and visitors should look for trolley signs for assistance in roaming between several exhibits. In addition to Carolina Gallery, MYST Gallery and Crescent Gallery, there will be additional storefronts open with special art walk exhibitions. Stephen Stinson, art photographer, and Ed Emory of Carolina Gallery are collaboratively producing a collection of photographs on canvas that feature portraits of important local artists.
The history of artists born here or choosing Spartanburg and environs to live is rich and deep. The region of Upstate South Carolina, as well as western North Carolina, has long attracted artists. This exhibit will introduce you to some of them. Each Art Walk will have additional photographs on display. Gallery 155, on the corner of Broad and Liberty, features selections form a local collection.
The Art Museum is showing "Paws & Reflect", a touring exhibit featuring artwork by leading artists whose focus is canines, as well as the photography show "Thomas Konig: My Amerika." The Artists Guild Gallery is showing work by Michael Slattery. Phifer Hall at Converse College and the Sandor Teszler Library at Wofford College will be open, showing "Sculpture from the Gardens: Brookgreen in the Upstate."
Several local retail merchants are participating by extending their hours into the evening.
Art Walk Spartanburg returns every third Thursday of the month with all venues open to the public.

Art Walk Spartanburg returns on Thursday, February 19 from 5 to 9 p.m.
In a new opportunity to explore the many art resources downtown. Posters and maps are available at the art venues, and visitors should look for trolley signs for assistance in roaming between several exhibits. In addition to Carolina Gallery, MYST Gallery and Crescent Gallery, there will be additional storefronts open with special art walk exhibitions. Stephen Stinson, art photographer, and Ed Emory of Carolina Gallery are collaboratively producing a collection of photographs on canvas that feature portraits of important local artists.
The history of artists born here or choosing Spartanburg and environs to live is rich and deep. The region of Upstate South Carolina, as well as western North Carolina, has long attracted artists. This exhibit will introduce you to some of them. Each Art Walk will have additional photographs on display. Gallery 155, on the corner of Broad and Liberty, features selections form a local collection.
The Art Museum is showing "Paws & Reflect", a touring exhibit featuring artwork by leading artists whose focus is canines, as well as the photography show "Thomas Konig: My Amerika." The Artists Guild Gallery is showing work by Michael Slattery. Phifer Hall at Converse College and the Sandor Teszler Library at Wofford College will be open, showing "Sculpture from the Gardens: Brookgreen in the Upstate."
Several local retail merchants are participating by extending their hours into the evening.
Art Walk Spartanburg returns every third Thursday of the month with all venues open to the public.

Busy Singles Awareness Day in The Hub City

With a tight, seamless sound — a mix of gypsy swing, big band, jazz, country and cross-genre Americana roots music, original songs and clever covers — the astonishing six-piece belies the 20-something ages of its members and its vast experience garnered swiftly after its union around Merlefest 2007 in Wilkesboro, N.C.
In fact, in less than two years, the band has played for more than 15,000 people; ridden in a van-with-trailer to get to shows from Texas to Nashville to the Carolinas; sold out shows throughout Texas and along the East Coast; shared stages with the likes of Lyle Lovett, Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, The Del McCoury Band, and Mark O’Connor; and recorded a full-length debut album with producers John Rees and Bil VornDick, the independently released WANDERIN’ (February 2008), which reached #10 on the Americana album chart and ranked #12 on WNCW's Top 100 of 2008.
It has spent the past months touring from coast to coast behind WANDERIN,’ racking up new fans and critical acclaim. At the same time, new songs have been pouring forth from singer-songwriter-guitarist Rob Teter and vocalist-violinist Phoebe Hunt; the band will be working in the studio this winter on a follow-up disc due out in 2009.
The Belleville Outfit came together in response to a slot at Merlefest 2007 offered to Spartanburg band The DesChamps, a group inspired and influenced by Uncle Walt’s Band and member Champ Hood, which had included singer-guitarist Marshall Hood (nephew of Champ), Teter and upright bass player Jeff Brown. Teter, Hood and Hunt met Brown, drummer Jonathan Konya and pianist Connor Forsyth in New Orleans, and after two days of marathon rehearsals, the band was ready for its first shows together — complete with a one-of-kind sound that mixes members’ Appalachian roots with the best of jazz, swing, blues, country, soul and gypsy music.
Teter, Forsyth and Konya had been studying music and business at Loyola for two years, and Hunt had earned a degree in history at the University of Texas at Austin while learning to play the fiddle in a local folk trio. Brown had joined the military. Hood was playing gigs for Austin’s Toni Price and Warren Hood and the Hoodlums. But after Merlefest, each decided to give the band their all. Its name (“belle ville” means beautiful town in French) honors New Orleans and the dramatic influence Hurricane Katrina had on the city and the Loyola trio. And “Belleville” is a Django Reinhardt song the band plays, which exemplifies a great portion of its sound.

With a tight, seamless sound — a mix of gypsy swing, big band, jazz, country and cross-genre Americana roots music, original songs and clever covers — the astonishing six-piece belies the 20-something ages of its members and its vast experience garnered swiftly after its union around Merlefest 2007 in Wilkesboro, N.C.
In fact, in less than two years, the band has played for more than 15,000 people; ridden in a van-with-trailer to get to shows from Texas to Nashville to the Carolinas; sold out shows throughout Texas and along the East Coast; shared stages with the likes of Lyle Lovett, Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, The Del McCoury Band, and Mark O’Connor; and recorded a full-length debut album with producers John Rees and Bil VornDick, the independently released WANDERIN’ (February 2008), which reached #10 on the Americana album chart and ranked #12 on WNCW's Top 100 of 2008.
It has spent the past months touring from coast to coast behind WANDERIN,’ racking up new fans and critical acclaim. At the same time, new songs have been pouring forth from singer-songwriter-guitarist Rob Teter and vocalist-violinist Phoebe Hunt; the band will be working in the studio this winter on a follow-up disc due out in 2009.
The Belleville Outfit came together in response to a slot at Merlefest 2007 offered to Spartanburg band The DesChamps, a group inspired and influenced by Uncle Walt’s Band and member Champ Hood, which had included singer-guitarist Marshall Hood (nephew of Champ), Teter and upright bass player Jeff Brown. Teter, Hood and Hunt met Brown, drummer Jonathan Konya and pianist Connor Forsyth in New Orleans, and after two days of marathon rehearsals, the band was ready for its first shows together — complete with a one-of-kind sound that mixes members’ Appalachian roots with the best of jazz, swing, blues, country, soul and gypsy music.
Teter, Forsyth and Konya had been studying music and business at Loyola for two years, and Hunt had earned a degree in history at the University of Texas at Austin while learning to play the fiddle in a local folk trio. Brown had joined the military. Hood was playing gigs for Austin’s Toni Price and Warren Hood and the Hoodlums. But after Merlefest, each decided to give the band their all. Its name (“belle ville” means beautiful town in French) honors New Orleans and the dramatic influence Hurricane Katrina had on the city and the Loyola trio. And “Belleville” is a Django Reinhardt song the band plays, which exemplifies a great portion of its sound.
