Tomorrow Art & Politics Come Together at The Showroom....

Exhibit Opening - Art & Politics - 10/15/08 - Wednesday
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Throughout history, artists have used their work as a medium in the search for truth. The political visions of artists have played a key role in this search and helped to define the truth of our society. The United States was founded in the name of freedom, equality, democracy, and our freedom of expression is central to these American ideals. In the year of this landmark American Presidential Campaign, this exhibit, Art and Politics 08’, will explore the ways in which contemporary art seeks social change.

How to Lose Weight and Eat Anything

You can eat basically anything you want, and you'll lose weight if you religiously take a brisk 30-minute walk six days a week, according to researchers from the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. This amount of exercise is enough to trim your waistline and cut your risk of developing metabolic syndrome, a common condition linked to obesity and a sedentary lifestyle that raises the odds of heart disease, diabetes and stroke, reports Reuters Health. "Our study shows that you'll benefit even if you don't make any dietary changes," study leader Johanna L. Johnson said in a statement.

The study: The Duke team examined results from the STRRIDE study (Studies of a Targeted Risk Reduction Intervention through Defined Exercise), which was funded by the National Institutes of Health. In this study, 171 middle-aged and overweight men and women were examined for the effects of varying amounts and intensity of exercise.

The results: They found that 41 percent of the participants had metabolic syndrome before they began exercising regularly. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of five conditions: a large waistline, high blood pressure, high levels of harmful triglycerides, low levels of "good" HDL cholesterol and high blood sugar. But after eight months of exercise, only 27 percent still had metabolic syndrome. "That's a significant decline in prevalence," said Johnson. "It's also encouraging news for sedentary, middle-aged adults who want to improve their health. It means they don't have to go out running four or five days a week; they can get significant health benefits by simply walking around the neighborhood after dinner every night." In addition, the Duke team found there was a greater health benefit to doing exercise of moderate intensity most days of the week over more intense activity just a few days a week.

The takeaway: Duke cardiologist Dr. William E. Kraus, the study's principal investigator, told Reuters, "The results of our study underscore what we have known for a long time. Some exercise is better than none, more exercise is generally better than less, and no exercise can be disastrous." The study findings were published in the American Journal of Cardiology this month.

TONIGHT @ the Shworoom

Matthew Knights Williams CD RELEASE - 10/10/08 - Friday
8:30 pm - 11:30 pm

Tickets : $10

MATTHEW KNIGHTS WILLIAMS is a family man and artist living and working in Cowpens, SC. In the book, Hub City Music Makers, music writer Peter Cooper describes Matthew as “an enormously talented and undeniably magnetic performer.” After surviving a turbulent adolescence and young adulthood spent navigating the pitfalls of destructive excess, Matthew has arrived at a place of grateful acceptance where his musical works reflect his experience, talent, and the hard won maturity of his soul and character.

COTTONWOOD, the new solo release from Matthew Knights Williams, tells the story of two lifelong friends who travel the same path, yet meet with different fates. Written in response to the untimely death of a close friend, the recording is deeply introspective and intended as a cautionary tale. Matthew, an accomplished songwriter and guitarist, employed top Nashville session players Jimmy Carter, John Hobbs, Kerry Marx, Brent Mason, Scott Sanders, and Scott Williamson to present this intensely personal material to the listening public. The result is Cottonwood. Matthew’s powerful lyrics, instantly recognizable vocals, and contagious melodies are exper tly delivered with a thoughtful, pleasing balance of Americana, Roots, and Rock.

Matthew will be joined on this night by several other musicians including Wes Wyatt and The Skinnymen (Bob Hinch, Wes Wyatt, Carroll Foster, Frank Estes), Faysouxx, David Ezell, Matt Parks, Brandon Turner, Joy Finch, Kevin Heuer, Don McGraw, Steve Cantrell, Freddie Vandeford, Baker Maultsby, Marc Higgins, Annabelle Ranck and Master of Ceremonies Sander Morrison.

Saturday!

The Weather WILL BE EXCELLENT FOR THIS...

Sarah Witt Tipi Project - 10/11/08 - Saturday
4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

"TENT(ative)"; a site-specific art installation to be on display in downtown Spartanburg near 101 East Main Street from October 11th through November 2nd. HUB-BUB artist-in-residence Sarah Witt has created life-size Native-American style tipis from salvaged and sustainable materials. "TENT(ative)" is a minimalist reconstruction of a traditional Plains Indian village. The collection and arrangement of the tipis will transform a vacant lot on Main Street into a lively green space by inviting the public to visit, explore and contemplate within the park-like environment.

The tents vary in height, from 10 feet to 17 feet, and each have a unique cover. The tipi skeleton is constructed from bamboo, a renewable resource. The tent covers are sewn from colorful plastic lumber tarps, which are discarded daily in every lumber yard. The concept of creating a structure from local sustainable materials parallels the Native Americans' model of resourcefulness in regards to their efficient and complete use of the buffalo. To respect the customary Indian formation, the doors to each unit will be facing the east.

We anticipate "TENT(ative)" to intrigue those who frequent downtown and additionally draw new visitors to the area. The unusual juxtaposition of modern waste materials with the humble iconic structure of the tipi will spur awareness, investigating issues of excess and sustainability. With its Native American roots, "TENT(ative)"will be a unique space that encourages spiritual reflection and positive human interactions. The opening reception for TENT(ative) will be October 11th, 2008, from 4pm until 6pm.

This event is free and open to the public.

Tonight.....

TONIGHT AT THE SHOWROOM…

THE COAL MEN

Friday, Oct. 3rd 9pm

Tickets : $10 advance/$12 door

With the addition of Chris Frame (Son Volt) on guitar and Jen Gunderman (The Jayhawks) ..boards, The Coal Men have gone from trio to quintet and their second full-length release, Beauty Is A Moment, reflects creative growth that shows no sign of letting up. Composer and guitarist Dave Coleman – who wrote or cowrote most the disc’s 12 cuts – is the force behind much of what puts The Coal Men into the first rank of roots rock/alt country music. Coleman writes with the fearless emotional candor that marks the best of Alabama songwriter Will Kimbrough’s work, and the band is just similar enough to the Jayhawks to invite favorable comparison. But despite Coleman’s slight, dismissible vocal resemblance to an earthier more soulful Jackson Browne, The Coal Men don’t really really sound like anyone else.

Coleman’s songs have the naturalness of good conversation and unfold with the same freshness. A laconic but literate and expressive lyricist who isn’t afraid to let melody pull an equal share, he paints with fewer strokes than many, yet gets so much out of them. For him and the rest of the Coal Men, beauty is a moment – actually, a series of moments – and there are a wealth of fine ones (“Natural Wonder,” “Cleveland Sky,” “ Louisiana ”) here. Coleman and Frame’s guitars, Dave Ray’s deep-bucket Levon Helm-type drumming, the tight but unceremonious competence of the band, and the quality of the songs put the album outside of trends and vogue.

"The Coal Men have risen from the ranks of Nashville up-and-comers to a spot as one of Music City's strongest, nerviest rock acts." — Peter Cooper THE TENNESSEAN

"This young quartet’s exhilarating mix of alt-country, roots-rock and pop might sound subversive in its stodgy Nashville, Tenn., hometown, but elsewhere its second album washes over the ears like a summer breeze. Featuring simple, sturdily built songs recorded on vintage gear in a mix that lets you hear the grain in the wood the instruments are made of, “Beauty Is a Moment” lives up to its title - and the Coal Men live up to their buzz." - Kevin R. Convey BOSTON HERALD

"Youthful cohorts The Coal Men lay down the roots with a tenacity that belies their tender years." — Jack Silverman NASHVILLE SCENE

Mix together well and drop by spoonful in hot oil, flip once. Should be golden brown on both sides. Can sprinkle with Ten X sugar if desired.

Woo Hoo Wednesday and THE END of.......

WOO HOO Wednesday! - 10/1/08 - Wednesday 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

WOO HOO Wednesday! An hour of pleasurable pedaling.
(Spartanburg Bike Gang, of the cycling kind.)

Who? You and your bicycle
When? Every Wednesday in October and November
What time? 4pm*
Where? Meet at the Morgan Square clock tower. We will also end our ride here.

Tune up the old two wheeler and stop being a gashole! Biking isn't only for the spandex-saavy. It's for anyone looking to get mobile by abandoning the automobile. It's good for your body and good for the environment and definitely good for your pocketbook. Not sure if you're ready to roll in the streets alone? No fear, the Spartanburg Bike Gang is accepting new members!

Join Artist-in-Residence Sarah Witt and the Spartanburg Bike Gang for a recreational, radical, and potentially rambunctious ride. This leisure bike ride will last approximately an hour, navigating the neighborhoods in the immediate downtown area. It's not a race, there's no destination, and there's no limit to who can come. Bring your child, bring your pet frog, bring your helmet!

Contact Sarah for details: Sarah@Hub-Bub.com

*We will depart at exactly 4pm, so please arrive a few minutes early. And wear a helmet!

Also, Tomorrow Night...Say It Ain't So....the Last (wait a second, Last?) FHTA Free FILM?...
