Kids Say.....

Art Linklater and Bill Cosby were Right : Kids DO say the Darnedest Things, Especially In Church.

KIDS IN CHURCH

3-year-old Reese : 'Our Father, Who does art in heaven, Harold is His name. Amen.'

A little boy was overheard praying: 'Lord, if you can't make me a better boy, don't worry about it. I'm having a real good time like I am.'

After the christening of his baby brother in church, Jason sobbed all the way home in the back seat of the car. His father asked him three times what was wrong. Finally, the boy replied, 'That preacher said he wanted us brought up in a Christian home, and I wanted to stay with you guys.'

One particular four-year-old prayed, 'And forgive us our trash baskets as we forgive those who put trash in our baskets.'

A Sunday school teacher asked her children as they were on the way to church service, 'And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?' One bright little girl replied, 'Because people are sleeping.'

A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin 5, and Ryan 3. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. 'If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, 'Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.' Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, ' Ryan , you be Jesus !'

A father was at the beach with his children when the four-year-old son ran up to him, grabbed his hand, and led him to the shore where a seagull lay dead in the sand. 'Daddy, what happened to him?' the son asked. 'He died and went to Heaven,' the Dad replied. The boy thought a moment and then said, 'Did God throw him back down?'

A wife invited some people to dinner. At the table, she turned to their six-year-old daughter and said, 'Would you like to say the blessing?' 'I wouldn't know what to say,' the girl replied. 'Just say what you hear Mommy say,' the wife answered. The daughter bowed her head and said, 'Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?'

Christabel and the Jons is a southern swing band based in east Tennessee that blends familiar standards with modern vintage sounding originals. Their music is acoustic and colorful, a blend of Appalachian mountain music and vintage swing. The group saunters and sways together with ease. Lead singer Christa DeCicco steals hearts with her come-hither delivery and charismatic stage performance. Her songwriting is heartfelt and nostalgic, and her distinctive, sultry voice brings it all home. Old suitcases and dressy vintage costumes from the 1920s-1950s give the performance a torch singer, speakeasy feel.

Since the spring of 2005 this quirky band has been performing and recording their distinctive style of folky swing. In November of 2006 they released their first full-length album, "Love and Circumstances.” Their newest album, "Custom Made For You," was released on December 12th.

Meanwhile in the real world they continue to write new material and tour, mostly around the southeast region but with periodic voyages to the northeast, southwest, and pacific northwest. They can often be found in thrift stores as they travel from town to town, hunting for clip-on ties and 1950s party dresses.

Man found burned in apartment with no sign of fire

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Investigators are baffled as to how a man suffered second- and third-degree burns inside his apartment - even though the only sign of a fire was a candle in the bathroom. Knoxville Fire Department crews found the 56-year-old victim inside his apartment bathroom Monday afternoon with third-degree burns to his face and second-degree burns to his hands.

Officials say they knocked on the door of the unit at Cagle Terrace Apartments, and went inside when they heard someone moaning.

The man, who was not identified, was later taken to a burn center for treatment.

Fire officials say their investigation is ongoing.

Cow knocks over woman on bike, steps on her legs

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - A woman escaped serious injury and refused medical treatment after a cow knocked her down and walked on her legs. Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks ranger Pete Taylor said the woman was riding her bicycle along the South Boulder Creek Trail on Monday when she encountered the cow and stopped to let the animal cross.

Instead, the cow knocked the woman over and stepped on her legs.

Taylor said the woman wasn't seriously hurt. Her name was not released.

The cow had left the area by the time rangers arrived, but other people warned fellow bikers and hikers on the trail about the animal.

Boulder Mountain Bike Alliance vice president Jason Vogel called the incident ``odd, rare and random.''

**COMPUTER SAFETY ALERT**

Beware! Biggest Computer Virus Ever?

"This one is nasty. Very, very nasty. Called "Conficker" or "Downadup," this new computer worm has infected more than 9 million computers and is spreading at the rate of 1 million a day, according to the software protection firm, F-Secure. "This is enormous; possibly the biggest virus we have ever seen," software security specialist David Perry of Trend Micro told Agence France Presse".

"Here's the real puzzler: So far, the virus has done no damage. Does that mean it's impotent, or does it portend a far more nefarious outcome? It could just be waiting to detonate, or it could be a test run by cybercriminals intent on profiting from the weakness in the future. "I think the bad guys are field testing a new technology," Perry told AFP. "If Conficker proves to work well, they could go out and sell malware (malicious software) to people. There is a huge market for selling criminal malware."

"The worm is self-replicating and spreads on networks and computers that do not have the security patches for Windows RPC Server Service. It can infect machines from the Internet or even by hiding on USB memory sticks that carry data from one computer to another, reports AFP. Once Conficker is on a computer, it's almost impossible to remove. "Here we are with a big, big outbreak, and they keep revamping their methodology to increase the size of it," Perry warned to AFP. "They could be growing this huge botnet to slice it up and sell it on the criminal market." If that happened, the infected computers would be "zombie"machines that would do the cybercriminals' bidding".

"One very troubling "feature" of this virus: It uses the brute force of computing power to try to crack the passwords of the machine being attacked. "That is something never seen before, and I find it disturbing," Perry told AFP. He advises people to choose better passwords. Mix in numbers, punctuation marks and upper-case letters to make them harder to deduce. Also, record your passwords in a paper notebook. "No hacker in the world can hack the written page locked away in your office," he told AFP".

"In 1950's America, the equality of man envisioned by the Declaration of Independence was far from a reality. People of color — blacks, Hispanics, Asians — were discriminated against in many ways, both overt and covert. The 1950's were a turbulent time in America, when racial barriers began to come down due to Supreme Court decisions, like Brown v. Board of Education; and due to an increase in the activism of blacks, fighting for equal rights."

"Martin Luther King, Jr., a Baptist minister, was a driving force in the push for racial equality in the 1950's and the 1960's. In 1963, King and his staff focused on Birmingham, Alabama. They marched and protested non-violently, raising the ire of local officials who sicced water cannon and police dogs on the marchers, whose ranks included teenagers and children. The bad publicity and break-down of business forced the white leaders of Birmingham to concede to some anti-segregation demands."

"Thrust into the national spotlight in Birmingham, where he was arrested and jailed, King helped organize a massive march on Washington, DC, on August 28, 1963. His partners in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom included other religious leaders, labor leaders, and black organizers. The assembled masses marched down the Washington Mall from the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial, heard songs from Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, and heard speeches by actor Charlton Heston, NAACP president Roy Wilkins, and future U.S. Representative from Georgia John Lewis."

"King's appearance was the last of the event; the closing speech was carried live on major television networks. On the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, King evoked the name of Lincoln in his "I Have a Dream" speech, which is credited with mobilizing supporters of desegregation and prompted the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The next year, King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize."

The following is the exact text of the spoken speech, transcribed from recordings.

"I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation."

"Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity."

"But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. So we have come here today to dramatize a shameful condition."

"In a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked "insufficient funds." But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. So we have come to cash this check — a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice. We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now.


"This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quick sands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children.
It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment. This sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges."


"But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred."

"We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force. The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. They have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone."

"As we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead. We cannot turn back. There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, "When will you be satisfied?" We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality. We can never be satisfied, as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one. We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped of their selfhood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating "For Whites Only". We cannot be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream."

"I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow jail cells. Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality. You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive."

Coma Cinema Rocks The House

Tonight, at the Showroom was an AWESOME band called " COMA CINEMA "

Coma Cinema is an American Musical Group on the Off Key Corral recording label.

They have been writing and performing music with various musicians since 2005.

The current line up consists of :

  • Mathew Cothran (guitar, vocals, lyrics)
  • Ronni Van Winkle (bass, vocals, lyrics)
  • Kenny Norseworthy (drums, vocals, lyrics)
  • Ryan Norton (Organ).

Coma Cinema perfoms pop music, influenced by various forms studio experimentation. Their first album, to be released on January 16th, 2009 is called "Baby Prayers"

The Petty Crimes Unit is an independently shot comedy series about a three-man police unit, specializing in petty crimes, searching for a rogue toaster.

The series began with Episode I, "Th3rd Degree," as an entry in the South Carolina Arts Commission's 2005 Toaster Film Festival. As one of the winners of the festival, the filmmakers decided to continue the production with a second episode, "The Shell of a Man." This chapter continues to focus on a rogue toaster's crime of burning breakfast and leaving a trail of charred crumbs in its wake. The toaster is a Wanted appliance and only one cop has the dough-nuts to take him down. Captain SC (Benny Lee Smith) of the McClain County Police Department, a veteran of petty crime investigations, believes in truth, justice and a good pair of Ray-Bans.

The director of this venture is Brad Tinsley, a Clemson University graduate who studied at the New York Film Academy in Hollywood.

Benny Lee Smith, the lead, is Director of Public Relations at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte who has also appeared in numerous feature films including "Heavy Weights," "My Fellow Americans," and "Patch Adams."

Jose Franco, the film's producer, is the Entertainment Editor at the Spartanburg Herald-Journal and a film buff who has a weekly television spot on NewsChannel 7 discussing movies.
