Farmers' Almanac: Startling Forecast

"You might want to put some extra insulation in your attic. The Farmers' Almanac has forecast below-average winter temperatures for most of the United States. "Numb's the word," says the 192-year-old publication, which claims an accuracy rate of 80 to 85 percent for its forecasts that are prepared two years in advance, reports The Associated Press."

"The 2009 edition predicts that fully two-thirds of the continental United States will have colder than average temperatures this winter. Only the far West and Southeast will have near-normal temps. "This is going to be catastrophic for millions of people," almanac editor Peter Geiger told AP, noting that the frigid forecast combined with high prices for heating fuel is sure to compound problems households will face in keeping warm. "

"Other details of the forecast:--Above-normal snowfall for the Great Lakes and Midwest, especially during January and February.--Above-normal precipitation for the Southwest in December.--Above-normal precipitation for the Southeast in January and February.--Unusually wet or snowy February for the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions."

"The Farmers' Almanac forecast is made by reclusive prognosticator Caleb Weatherbee, who uses a secret formula based on sunspots, the position of the planets and the tidal action of the moon, reports AP. He may just be right. Mother Nature is already hinting at a rougher-than-normal winter. The clues? That would be an abundance of acorns already on the ground and the frequency of fog in August.

Something in Water Linked to Diabetes

Uh oh. Even if you give up the burgers and fries and faithfully exercise most days of the week, you may still develop Type 2 Diabetes just by doing what's good for you: drinking water. Low-level arsenic exposure, possibly from drinking water, has been linked to this form of diabetes, formerly called adult-onset diabetes, according to a new analysis of government data by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland.

The Associated Press reports that although utilities use filtration systems to eliminate arsenic, it can still get into drinking water naturally when minerals dissolve or through industrial pollution from coal burning and copper smelting. The Hopkins researchers analyzed the medical tests of 788 adults and found a nearly fourfold increase in the risk of Type 2 Diabetes in people with low arsenic concentrations in their urine compared with people who had even lower levels. Specifically, those who had type 2 diabetes had 26 percent higher inorganic arsenic levels than people without type 2 diabetes. (Some types of seafood contain nontoxic organic arsenic so the researchers adjusted their analysis for signs of seafood intake.)

This isn't the first study to show a link between arsenic and type 2 diabetes. Research in other countries has also made that connection, but only with high levels of arsenic; however, this is the first study to show that even low levels can cause this disease. "The good news is, this is preventable," lead author Dr. Ana Navas-Acien told AP, adding that new safe drinking water standards may be needed if the findings are duplicated in future studies. That research has already begun with a new study of 4,000 people.

How can arsenic contribute to diabetes? Who Knows, laboratory studies show that arsenic impairs insulin secretion in pancreas cells treated with an arsenic compound.

There is good news: Data for this study were collected in 2003 and 2004. In 2001, the U.S. government lowered arsenic standards for public water systems to 10 parts per billion; public water systems had to comply with the new standard by 2006. The study findings were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Dave Matthews Band sax player LeRoi Moore dies

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A publicist for the Dave Matthews Band says saxophone player LeRoi Moore has died of injuries suffered in an all-terrain-vehicle accident in June. Publicist Ambrosia Healy says Moore died Tuesday at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was initially hospitalized in late June after the accident on his farm outside Charlottesville, Va. Moore had recently returned to his Los Angeles home to begin physical rehabilitation when complications forced him back into the hospital.

An Interesting Find

"An Ancient Find Proves Christ's Words?"

"Archaeologists have unearthed in Jordan what they believe to be the first Christian church in the world. Dating back almost 2,000 years to sometime between 33 AD to 70 AD, the church, which is actually a cave, was found underneath Saint Georgeous Church, which itself dates back to 230 AD, in Rihab in northern Jordan near the Syrian border. "

"Agence France Presse and The Jordan Times report that the church is thought to have sheltered the world's earliest Christians from persecution and certain death. "We have evidence to believe this church sheltered the early Christians--the 70 disciples of Jesus Christ," Abdul Qader al-Husan, the head of Jordan's Rihab Centre for Archaeological Studies, told AFP. Those 70 early Christians that created this church are described in a mosaic as "the 70 beloved by God and Divine," says Husan. They fled persecution in Jerusalem and founded churches in northern Jordan. Rihab is now home to a total of 30 churches, and Jesus and the Virgin Mary are believed to have passed through the area, Husan told AFP. "


"According to Wikipedia, the 70 disciples were early followers of Jesus. The Gospel of Luke 10:1-24 says that Jesus appointed them and sent them out in pairs to spread his message. Citing historical sources, Husan explained that these early Christians lived and practiced their religious rituals in the underground church and only left it once Christianity was accepted by Roman rulers. The bishop deputy of the Greek Orthodox archdiocese, Archimandrite Nektarious, described the discovery as an "important milestone for Christians all around the world."

"What did they find inside the world's first church? In addition to several stone seats that were probably used by clergy and a circular-shaped area that served as an apse, they found pottery that dates back to between the 3rd and 7th centuries, indicating the church was used until late Roman rule. There is also a deep tunnel that is thought to have led to a source of water. "

A Man and His Dog...

Welcome to another Week , Like Last week a reader sent me the following story , Enjoy it. ( Thank you for the Story , You know who you are )

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it
suddenly occurred to him that he was dead.He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight.

When he was close enough, he called out, 'Excuse me, where are we?' 'This is Heaven, sir,' the man answered. 'Wow! Would you happen to have some water?' the man asked. 'Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right away.The man gestured, and the gate began to open.'Can my friend,' gesturing toward his dog, 'come in, too?' the traveler asked.

'I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets.' The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog. After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence.

As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book. 'Excuse me!' he called to the man. 'Do you have any water?' 'Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in.' 'How about my friend here?' the traveler gestured to the dog. 'There should be a bowl by the pump.'

They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. The traveler filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog.When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree. 'What do you call this place?' the traveler asked. 'This is Heaven,' he answered. 'Well, that's confusing,' the traveler said. 'The man down the road said that was Heaven, too.' 'Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's hell.' 'Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?' 'No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind.'

Soooo …………. Sometimes, we wonder why friends keep forwarding jokes to us without writing a word. Maybe this will explain. When you are very busy, but still want to keep in touch, guess what you do? You forward jokes. When you have nothing to say, but still want to keep contact, you forward jokes. When you have something to say, but don't know what, and don't know how, you forward jokes. Also to let you know that you are still remembered, you are still important, you are still loved, you are still cared for, guess what you get?
A forwarded joke. So, next time if you get a joke, don't think that you've been sent just another forwarded joke, but that you've been thought of today and your friend on the other end of your computer wanted to send you a smile.

Born and raised in the Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina, Malcolm Holcombe is being recognized by the contemporary U.S and European folk/americana community as a performer of national stature, and an uncommonly unique guitarist/vocalist about whom Rolling Stone magazine says: "Haunted country, acoustic blues and rugged folk all meet [here]...Try as you might to use other adjectives, when you write about Malcolm Holcombe and his work, you always come back to rugged and rustic. His visage appears to be carved of granite, and his voice is a sculpture crafted of tree bark and discarded railroad iron. His words and images cling to you for hours, even days, like wood smoke.

All of those things certainly apply to his new Gamblin’ House, produced by Ray Kennedy (Steve Earle, Ray Davies), a gentleman that Malcolm has wanted to work with for a long while. "We were second-story men. We put our ears to the safe and cracked it," offers Malcolm rather cryptically. (A conversation with Malcolm Holcombe is a fascinating festival of crypticisms, old sayings, and anecdotes punctuated with
pronouncements.)

"We learned the songs downstairs, then went upstairs and played them." Joining Malcolm and Ray in that pursuit was a rhythm section of Kenny Malone and David Roe, along with longtime cohort Ed Snodderly on several stringed instruments including what Malcolm calls "old-time fiddle." As always, there are echoes of John Prine and Guy Clark and the lesser-known kindred spirit Bill Morrissey, but the total package is all Malcolm Holcombe. His is a sound that combines harmonica-blessed folk, acoustic blues, stringband country, and smalltown-bred soul.

No, You aren't seeing things....

No, you aren't seeing things...I am actually writing a blog this Morning. I thought I would write today....Lots of things happening in the World. Meaning Gas Prices are falling as well as Oil Prices Dipping to New Lows, The Olympics are taking Place In Beijing and THE LAST MEDAL COUNT : USA 27 China 22 and the other Countries I can't Remember. "The Dark Knight" is well over the 400 Million Mark Beating out the other Movies at the Theaters . Also...A reminder about the " From HERE to Awesome " Film Festival at The Showroom , Downtown Spartanburg.

HUB-BUB presents the "From Here to Awesome" Showcase Film Festival every Thursday night at 7:30 p.m., starting August 7 and ending October 2.

Each week another short and feature length film will be screened and the public is invited to attend these FREE showings. Independent films competed to be one of the select films shown at theaters and other venues like The Showroom worldwide. For updates and more insight check out this blog. "From Here to Awesome" is the brainchild of Arin Crumley, a filmmaker who did a three-week residency at HUB-BUB in May 2008. *17 and over admitted.

FEATURE: The Other America: This film centers on Ari, a homeless urban teenager. It is a coming of age story in the context of poverty, disillusionment, and the failure of the American dream to embrace perceived outsiders. By showing the complexity of Ari’s emotional life, and the conflicts that surround other teens close to him, “The Other America” is about the real hopes and dreams of American kids’ lives.

SHORT: Louder Than Words: A Flipbook Story: A young man tries to poison a bunny rabbit for eating from his perfect little garden. As a result, he discovers that for every action there’s an equal and opposite reaction, when his home becomes infested with maggots, and flies are ruining his meals and his peace. To win back control of his home he must defeat the tiny enemy invaders in an epic fly battle.

WOW....REALLY?

Iconic U.S. Natural Landmark Collapses

"It was one of the most photographed arches in Utah's Arches National Park, but now the famed Wall Arch is no more. It collapsed. "

"Although no one actually saw it fall apart, park officials think it happened on August 4 or 5. Located along Devils Garden Trail, the arch was one of the most popular in the park and was long a favorite stopping point for photographers, reports The Associated Press. Formed by entrada sandstone, it was whittled down over time by nature to form the distinctive formation that was 33 feet tall and 71 feet across. It was the 12th largest of the park's estimated 2,000 arches."

"Why did it collapse? Gravity and erosion are to blame, forces that will eventually destroy other arches in the park. "They all let go after a while," park official Paul Henderson told AP. This is the first major collapse since the nearby Landscape Arch fell in 1991. Rock continues to fall in the area, so the park has closed this portion of the trail. "

Eat This for Breakfast. Lose Weight?

"If you eat two eggs for breakfast every day for two months, you could very well
lose weight--as much as 65 percent more weight than if you eat a bagel instead,
even though the eggs and the bagel have the same amount of calories. That's the
word from a new study conducted by researchers at the Pennington Biomedical
Research Center's laboratory of infection and obesity, a part of the Louisiana
State University system."
"In this study, those who ate the eggs for breakfast also lost 61 percent more
body mass and felt more energetic than those who ate bagel breakfasts. Lead
study author Dr. Nikhil V. Dhurandhar acknowledges that it's tough to stick to a
diet, but eggs are satisfying and provide enough of an energy boost that they
help dieters achieve their weight loss goals. Specifically, Dhurandhar's team
found that those who ate two eggs a day for breakfast ate fewer calories at the
next meal, providing evidence that the egg breakfast had appetite-suppressing
properties that lasted well beyond breakfast."

"Best of all, the triglyceride levels and HDL and LDL cholesterol levels of study
participants eating eggs remained relatively unchanged. The study findings were
published in the August 5 issue of the International Journal of Obesity."

What happens when you yawn? If that causes your dog to yawn, give him a treat. He's one smart pooch.

Reuters reports that some dogs find human yawns contagious, which suggests they are a rudimentary capacity for empathy, something scientists thought only applied to humans and chimpanzees. Fully 72 percent of 29 dogs tested by British researchers at London's Birkbeck College were so sensitive to human yawns that seeing one made them yawn in response.

Writing in the journal Biology Letters, lead study author Atsushi Senju said this behavior showed dogs were skilled at reading human social cues and "may relate to their capacity for empathy."

What is National Night Out?

It's America's Night Out Against Crime!

The "25th Annual National Night Out" (NNO), a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), has been scheduled for Tuesday, August 5, 2008.

Last year's National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 10,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, over 35 million people participated in National Night Out 2007.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT is designed to:

Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;

Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;

Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships;

and Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

"Whether you're a practiced road warrior or only fly occasionally, what you wear when you travel can be critical for keeping you comfortable and even safe in case of an emergency. It wasn't too long ago that flying on an airplane meant dressing in your Sunday best. Coats, ties and dress shoes for men and modest dresses or skirt suits for women. Children were dressed up as if they were going to a fancy party. Now flying is such an ordeal that people dress for survival."

"If you want to be comfortable and safe while flying, don't wear these five things, according to Christopher Elliott of Tribune Media Services:"

1. "Heavy perfume or cologne-These scents may be your olfactory signature, but try to refrain before you board a plane. Perfume and cologne can permeate the interior of an aircraft, overwhelming and even sickening your fellow passengers."

2. "High heels-Not only are high heels, especially stilettos, uncomfortable and restrictive on long flights, but also they can be a danger should you be forced to evacuate the aircraft using the inflatable emergency slides."
