Forecast .....COLD AND WET ....

Farmers' Almanac: Startling Forecast

"You might want to put some extra insulation in your attic. The Farmers' Almanac has forecast below-average winter temperatures for most of the United States. "Numb's the word," says the 192-year-old publication, which claims an accuracy rate of 80 to 85 percent for its forecasts that are prepared two years in advance, reports The Associated Press."

"The 2009 edition predicts that fully two-thirds of the continental United States will have colder than average temperatures this winter. Only the far West and Southeast will have near-normal temps. "This is going to be catastrophic for millions of people," almanac editor Peter Geiger told AP, noting that the frigid forecast combined with high prices for heating fuel is sure to compound problems households will face in keeping warm. "

"Other details of the forecast:--Above-normal snowfall for the Great Lakes and Midwest, especially during January and February.--Above-normal precipitation for the Southwest in December.--Above-normal precipitation for the Southeast in January and February.--Unusually wet or snowy February for the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions."

"The Farmers' Almanac forecast is made by reclusive prognosticator Caleb Weatherbee, who uses a secret formula based on sunspots, the position of the planets and the tidal action of the moon, reports AP. He may just be right. Mother Nature is already hinting at a rougher-than-normal winter. The clues? That would be an abundance of acorns already on the ground and the frequency of fog in August.
