Better Late Than Never....

Thursday:
Reading: Ron Rash - 12/4/08 - Thursday
7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Novelist Ron Rash stops by the Hub City to promote his new book, Serena.

The year is 1929, and newlyweds George and Serena Pemberton arrive from Boston in the North Carolina mountains to create a timber empire. Although George has already lived in the camp long enough to father an illegitimate child, Serena is new to the mountains—but she soon shows herself the equal of any worker, overseeing crews, hunting rattlesnakes, even saving her husband’s life in the wilderness.

Together, this Lord and Lady Macbeth of the woodlands ruthlessly kill or vanquish all who fall out of favor. Yet when Serena learns that she will never bear a child, she vengefully sets out to kill the son George had without her. Mother and child begin a struggle for their lives, and when Serena suspects George is protecting his illegitimate family, the Pemberton’s intense, passionate marriage starts to unravel as the story moves toward its shocking reckoning.

"Ron Rash’s new novel Serena catapults him to the front ranks of the best American novelists. This novel will make a wonderful movie, and the brave actress who plays Serena is a shoe-in for an Academy Award nomination." -- Pat Conroy

Tyler Ramsey - 12/5/08 - Friday
9:00 pm - 12:00 am

Tickets: $10 advance/$12 door

Ramsey is best known for his guitar work. Crafting delicate, finger-style guitar picking reminiscent of John Fahey and Leo Kottke, but with a sum effect that is all his own. Whether it’s indie folk, country blues or finger style guitar – Ramsey is a composer of intricate, ethereal songs of melancholy and rumination. It's taken Tyler some time to get to this point. Tyler has spent years perfecting and honing his sound. It's been a journey that has taken him through many different genres of music, numerous and varied bands, and all around the world. While living in the mountains of Western North Carolina he immersed himself in the varied folk styles of the area. Inspired by the traveling country blues musicians that used to pass through the mountains, Tyler spends his time experimenting with his piano and guitar playing while continuously honing his craft as a songwriter and instrumentalist. He is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist who is always willing to sit in with friends or jump on board a promising project, no matter what the musical style.

This willingness to contribute to other projects has put Tyler in a very fortunate position; playing guitar with Band of Horses. Last year Bill Reynolds, long time friend and bassist for Band of Horses invited Tyler to visit him and the rest of the band in South Carolina. Tyler quickly hit it off with lead singer Ben Bridwell, who asked him to open for the band on their fall tour and come on board as their new guitar player. Tyler has since been on several tours across the country and abroad with Band of Horses and continues to play his own shows in between in support of his incredible solo release, A Long Dream About Swimming Across The Sea released in January on Echo Mountain Records. Don't miss this opportunity to see one of our regions best guitarist and songwriter.
